Finding success in his karate training, John was invited to join the national junior squad which took him up to Liverpool to take part in the famously gruelling KUGB squad training sessions. Having achieved his 4th dan (4th level of black belt) and competed, judged and refereed at a national level, John continues to teach at the Exeter karate club. |

External Grading Examiners
Grading is the process of being tested for your next belt colour, representing an increase in the stage of learning karate. These are not carried out by your own instructor. Instead, a senior examiner from the Karate Union of Great Britain examines the students in a formal grading.
Exeter SKC is lucky enough to be regularly visited by the chief instructor of the KUGB who carries out the grading examination of our students.
![]() | Andy Sherry (8th Dan)Sensei Andy Sherry has more than 40 years experience of training in karate and was the first British person ever to be awarded a black belt in shotokan karate. Mr Sherry has won a huge variety of titles in karate competition, including European and British championships. He is the chief instructor and chairman of the KUGB and coaches the hugely successful KUGB karate team who have been world champions on multiple occasions. |
